This offering is one of a number of Matthew Scudder short stories that Lawrence Block has written over the years. Scudder, Block's NYC "unofficial" private detective, has played prominently through all of LB's work over the past 35 years or so, and these small vignettes are satisfying morsels to savor while waiting on the days when Block lets Scudder comes out to play in the novels.In this sad-eyed tale of the AIDS crisis in the gay community, Scudder undertakes to find the reason for several unexplained deaths in an AIDS hospice. Can these men simply be dying as they waste away from the disease and its cruel subsets of illness, or is someone murdering them? And why? The common denominator is a mysterious woman who visits the men before they pass, and the suspicion's that she is the reason that death comes, perhaps bidden and carried out by the woman known, in short, as Mercy.
Scudder's inquiries fill the narrative, with he himself being almost a spectator, in the background and reporting in the most matter-of-fact way, the events as they unfold. We see the world as painted by the characters and their perspectives as they interact with Scudder.
It's always a pleasure to see something with the Lawrence Block signature, and this little tale of sorrow, death, and ultimately, humanity, is a keeper.

Matt Scudder is one of the most interesting mystery protagonists in the genre, and for those who have never read any of the novels or short stories this is a very good place to start.
The plot is unusual, Scudder is as great as always. He is interesting, tough and human. Do not miss the books he is in. Liam Neeson is playing him tn a movie filming now.
The Matt Scudder series is my favorite of all time --- but how satisfying can any 18 page story be? Not very.
I know that a lot of folks have issues with how flawed Scudder is - to me, that is his main attraction. Scudder is all too human, and all too believable, which is what makes reading Scudder books and stories so wonderful.
This is a well-written story. It is short and easy to read. It is not however a violent crime novel or a classic detective whodoneit. The subject matter is AIDs, hospice, and dying and Scudder is asked to figure out if someone is hastening patient's deaths.

I first read this short story in a New Mystery Anthology several years ago and found it immensely enjoyable. It is one that I have revisited over the years. The author doesn't feel the need to have a car chase or a shoot out but instead draws into a highly engrossing human drama. I can't praise this story enough. If you want to read a first-rate new mystery with nuance and tenderness, then you owe it to yourself to read this story.
