St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church is a quiet, inner-city parish—until its pastor, Father Henry Felger, is found dead, lying in the snow. When his death is ruled a homicide, accusations abound.

Libby Kinder, with most fingers pointing at her, is unhappy with the direction the investigation is taking and starts her own sleuthing. Central to her inquiry is motive. Most difficult is questioning close friends in the parish because the unsettling truth is, the perpetrator is most likely someone she knows.

With intelligence and wit, she searches for answers; some coming easily, some more difficult to discern.A compelling first mystery novel by Kathryn A. Imler, it will have readers guessing who did it and why.

A Most Grievous Fault A mystery edition by Kathryn A Imler Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

A Catholic priest is found dead on icy church steps. What seems to be an accident is determined to be a murder. The only suspects are the 5 parishioners who happen to have a key to the church. They all seem like good people (except one, and he has an alibi). I feel like the characterization is a little unrealistic. I don't think the suspects are acting like they would be in real life. The book could be shorter. There is a lot of detail that just isn't necessary. Finally, as a Catholic who doesn't have all sorts of issues with the church, I find some things in the book very annoying. It felt like the author has issues and she wrote this book to make them known.

A Most Grievous Fault A mystery edition by Kathryn A Imler Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I liked the way that the author developed the characters. They were credible and true to life which allows the reader to understand their motivations.
Great story teller with genuine details to make you feel you are really there. I loved the Catholic issues and references that gives it real depth from the title to the characters. I would never have believed this was a first writing. I held on until the last page. Hail, Kathryn! Best of luck and I look forward to another piece. A Franciscan Sister
I loved the double entendre of the title, not in a risqué sense, but if you are a Catholic and a woman, you'll get it. Nice set of characters, lots of red herrings, and as an avid mystery reader, I loved the background truths that reference the title. More than a 'good cozy read' from a first time mystery writer, but a murder mystery with real substantive context. What a joy! Would like more of Libby's adventures.
I loved this book. A fast read and I could not figure it out till the very end when it was laced out for me. It is well worth the 2.99 in fact under priced. Hope she writes more!!
I enjoyed this multi-layered story about several mysteries of life... A murder being one of them. The characters, especially the suspects, are easily recognized as genuine by anyone who's an engaged member of most any Christian congregation. The book dragged a little a few times with multiple reviews of the suspects, motives and actions surrounding the murder of a beloved priest. However, I was still drawn in and found myself constantly reevaluating who I thought was the murderer. This made it delightful right to the end. The other "mysteries of life" to which I refer are the rules and prejudices of the Roman Catholic Church and of society as a whole. As a non-Catholic, I found the book's wonderments about issues of power, justice, inclusion, grace and respect spoke to me too and added more depth to the characters and story.
I thought it was a great read! I liked the characters, I thought Libby was a great amateur sleuth and would like more of her. And I liked her. I liked the controversial topics brought up, and there were a few. I appreciated the animals in the story, but I always do. They add a nice touch of realism. The descriptive weather brought back some memories of living in the midwest as did Catholic church rituals. Just enough churchy stuff to make you go "Oh, I remember that" I learned a few things about the Catholic church I didn't know. The secrets of the sacristy and a thurible.

It was a good mystery, I read it again after I knew who the murderer was. You certainly don't have to have any ties to the Catholics to enjoy this, but if you do, or ever did, it makes it that more interesting.
There are several aspects of this book that I like. One of them is the pacing that the author uses. Each of the central characters are well established before we meet the next one. I didn't find myself going back to be reminded of who a particular character was, or their role in the church. Additionally, the pacing at the end was unusually good. So often, I feel like an author attempts to tie up loose ends way too quickly. Not so with this author.

Another feature that sits well with me is that I am reminded of the traditional ways of the Catholic Church, while being faced with current social issues. The book is a good who-done-it, mixing well with these social issues. One need not be Catholic to enjoy the book.

It is an easy read that kept me guessing until the end. Would definitely recommend!
